Batting fifth, for the CA Delinquents, Kevin Mitchell

Two days before the April 15 deadline, California’s Franchise Tax Board has produced a list of the Golden State’s leading tax delinquents.

The name that’s getting all the attention, among the 250 people and businesses who owe the state at least $100,000: “Baywatch” alumna and current “Dancing With The Stars” participant Pamela Anderson (he said, resisting all temptation to post a photo of her in that red swimsuit).

State records show a tax lien for $493,144 was filed against Ms. Anderson in April of last year.

The name that caught my eye, however, was the fifth person on the list — one Kevin D. Mitchell of San Diego, who owes more than $5.184 million.

That’s the same Kevin Mitchell who was the 1989 National League Most Valuable Player, as a left-fielder for the San Francisco (click here for one of the greatest catches you’ll ever see by an outfielder).

The same Kevin Mitchell who reportedly was on the phone making reservations for a flight back to California when the New York Mets began their famous comeback in Game Six of the 1986 World Series (the story goes that Mitchell had to get out of his street clothges, put his uniform back on (in the process, forgetting his protective cup), before managing a two-out single to keep the rally alive).

Sadly, Mitchell’s not the only member of the ’86 Mets to run afoul of tax laws. Former Mets outfielder Darryl Strawberry and pitcher Ron Darling have suffered through public bouts with the IRS.

#1 on the list: Halsey Minor

btw, if you want to stump your friends with a bit of California trivia: at the top of the tax delinquency list is San Francisco glamour couple Halsey and Shannon Miner, to the tune of $13.12 million.

In case you don’t know: Halsey Minor of a co-founder of CNet Networks, turning the start-up into a NASDAQ 100 firm.

Along the way, he’s enjoyed a decided joie de vivre, with a penchant for expensive art, fast horses, stunning women,  elegant homes and all sorts of tangled litigation.

As they like to say: only in California . . .
